Artist's Comments

Okay, the colours were hard enough WITHOUT the scanner butting in on the action. Seriously... must get better scanner, or access to a better scanner.

I beg forgiveness from any building inspectors or architects in regards to the anatomically incorrect representations of office building ruins. I'm hoping no one else cares, though 8)

I used my Eva02 model for reference on the construction details of the subject, but the pose was from repeated revision of the original thumbnails and sketches.

Colours are in copic marker (sketch), multiliners, and just a touch of white gel pen. Done on thick marker paper, just a *bit* larger than will fit on my 8.5x11 scanner at home *grrr*

So, this scan was again, a colourific wreck. It took about 4 hours between me and Chris for me to be happy enough with it to upload. Some day, if there is demand, I will have to get these professionally digitized so they can be properly reproduced as prints.

Not today, though.

I really love how you did the ruins, I wish the blue colour could stand out more *yeah yeah, scanner's fault* Maybe you can try the selective colours options (edit>adjustment) then you can control each of the colours (magenta, yellow, red, blah blah) although it doesn't really help >____>
The details of the mecha is just awesome!

What?? Chris helped you? You two should help me as well, my scanner is ruining everything T____T

You should have Chris walk through stuff with you. He came up with some good ideas which I used (painfully) to correct my colouring.

Thanks for the praise (=

It's been a while since I've watched Evangelion. 12 years? Something like that. It was back in the day when anime fansubs were released in the .vob media format. MPEG-2 era, i think. I'll just comment on the drawing itself, rather than the content. Forgive me if a comment goes against the lore. "But... it's supposed to be flat shaded!"

Lighting:

I would like to have seen more shading on the mech and on the buildings themselves. Right now, it appears as though the shading is washed out, particularly near the undersides of the Eva02, which i think should be darker than you've coloured it, especially with the amount of direct light that is implied by the hard shadows on the ground

The glass is wonderful. How the heck did you get that shading with copics? I often forget that you can't naturally "blend" layers using your media of choice. Trying to find colours that match the other colours after being shaded by thick glass? I have no idea how you do it.

Perspective:

Placing the vanishing point behind Eva02 is a nice trick, and draws the eyes towards the mech. The point of view that you chose seems to come from the 5th storey of a building, or possibly from another mech unit. It makes the Eva02 seem more human, which also has the effect of making it feel much smaller (is this a good thing or a bad thing?). Whenever I look at this drawing, I forget how large the Eva02 is, even though there are many reinforcing elements all around.

Composition:

It feels a bit odd that the left building is pretty much empty. You can't see anything in the windows, and you can't see anything in the exposed areas. While this isn't that important, having the hand on the building, along with the shattered glass, makes it feel more of a focus point than you probably intended. Had the hand not been there, I probably wouldn't have noticed it.

It seems odd to me that there is no other sign of life around. It seems barren. Maybe this has to do with the plot of the Anime, of which I remember nothing.
:iconthaellin:
Blending can actually take place quite naturally with copics. Think of them like watercolours (wet on dry or wet on almost-dry) - that's essentially how they blend. Semi-translucent layering.

The depth in the Eva is lacking, yeah. It's a problem with my choice of reds. I would probably try to bring in some purples today, but I don't know if I had anything available when this was done *shrug*.
